You don't like crime novels? They're all
predictable macho rubbish featuring over-the-top psychos and alcoholic
police officers? Think again. In The Cutting Room Louise Welsh has managed
to do that rare thing. She has created a crime novel in which the writing
is as good as the story. And what a story.
Instead of focusing on a police officer it centres around Rilke, a 42
year old Glaswegian auctioneer who discovers some very disturbing old
photos of mutilated bodies and decides to investigate. Not only did the
story have me hooked but I also became engrossed in the character of Rilke
himself, and the rather seedy things he gets up to in city parks at three
in the morning.
A brilliantly dark and grimy read which you won't want to put down.
